The adoption of generative AI tools in the workplace feels a lot like the early days of the internet—a period many of us remember as both exciting and uncertain. Just like the internet transformed how we worked, communicated, and did business, AI is now reshaping our workflows, creativity, and productivity.

In observing how people are adopting generative AI, I’ve noticed four distinct groups emerge, much like those early internet adopters:

1. The Enthusiasts: These individuals use AI tools regularly and are proud of how these tools enhance their efficiency and output. They experiment, share their findings, and are quick to adopt new capabilities.

2. The Quiet Users: This group actively uses AI but keeps it under wraps. Whether out of fear of judgment, job security concerns, or a belief that AI use might be seen as ‘cheating,’ they prefer to keep their AI use discreet.

3. The Curious but Uncertain: These are the people who see the potential of AI, are genuinely excited about its possibilities, but aren’t sure where to start or how to integrate it effectively into their work.

4. The Skeptics: This group has little interest in adopting AI tools. Whether due to skepticism, comfort with traditional methods, or lack of exposure, they remain on the sidelines.

Each of these groups reflects a natural response to change and innovation. But here’s the thing: just like the internet became an essential part of our professional and personal lives, generative AI is on a similar trajectory. The question isn’t if AI will become integral to our work—it’s how we’ll choose to adapt to it.

For leaders and teams, the opportunity lies in fostering a culture of curiosity, lowering the barriers to experimentation, and normalizing conversations about AI use. Because in the end, the workplaces that embrace these tools thoughtfully and strategically will be the ones that thrive in this new era.

So, which group do you see yourself in—and where do you see your team heading?
